In 2001, the Church Council on Justice and Corrections (based in Ottawa, Ontario) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to discuss God’s justice and religious reasons for punishment. In this article, Carole Oliver summarizes key ideas from a daylong workshop on the theology of justice and punishment, this being the gist of the AGM theme, “A conversation on God’s justice: Healing or retribution?â€? The day ran from personal anecdotes on “life’s lessons on justice and punishment,â€? through activities to identify and visualize the religious roots of punishment, to small group discussions on current issues relating to justice and punishment.
