Part A of this paper, by Roseanne McInnes, considers the history of diversion of young offenders in South Australia, and also looks at the family conference as a sentencing option in practice. Part B, by Sue Hetzel, provides an overview of the role of the conference coordinator and concludes that in spite of the many issues which remain to be resolved, the family conference have been successful in empowering young people.
