Balancing Justice in New York State is a nonpartisan, educational project sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State. The project was designed with the League’s educational mission in mind of encouraging the active and informed participation of citizens in their government. It engaged citizens, along with criminal justice professionals and state and local legislators, in small group discussions throughout the state to focus on the state’s criminal justice system. The goals for the project were to educate citizens, give them ownership in the issues, and empower them to begin to work toward positive change.
