The Reverend Stan Basler, director of the United Methodist Criminal Justice & Mercy Ministry in Oklahoma City, is a leading proponent of restorative justice in the state of Oklahoma. In this article he calls for a cultural shift to restorative justice as an alternative vision for perceiving and responding to crime. He explains key Biblical foundations for restorative justice, especially in contrast to retributive justice. In addition, he emphasizes that restorative justice is community-centered justice. He also cites examples of restorative justice in practice, such as victim-offender mediation programs and drug courts.
