A program model is presented based on detailed study of 14 community service programs in the U.S. Two types of programs were identified. One group, geared primarily to felony offenders, combined community service with other sanctions and services, including financial restitution. A second group, aimed primarily at misdemeanant offenders, required that offenders complete community service only. The immediate results of program activities are identified, along with the socially beneficial outcomes of the activities.
