David Simpson is a Youth Court Stipendiary Magistrate in the Inner London Youth Court. In this article he asserts that relational justice and the early intervention approach required by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 offer real hope in addressing youth at risk and youth offending. In particular he contends that continuity of relationships among the various parties in youth justice is a good thing. Currently, discontinuity is a problem in magistrates’ courts. In that continuity is essential for good and effective relationships among parties involved in the youth justice system, fundamental change needs to occur to make continuity of involvement the norm and not the exception.
