The three chapters in Part One, “A Philosophical and Professional Framework for Correctional Counseling,” explore the personal dimension of correctional counseling, the various purposes of correctional counseling, and the world of corrections from the perspective of the correctional counselor. The two chapters of Part Two, “Offender Assessment, Diagnosis, and Classification,” discuss how these tasks can be achieved by clinical identification of mentally ill offenders and the systematic testing or screening of all correctional clients for risk potential. The four chapters of Part Three, “Foundations for Correctional Counseling and Treatment,” discuss four types of treatment strategies: psychoanalytic therapy, radical behavior interventions, social learning models, and cognitive therapies. The two chapters of Part Four, “Group and Family Approaches to Correctional Counseling and Treatment,” address the functions of group treatment programs for offenders and the use of family treatment programs with offenders who come from dysfunctional family systems. The three chapters of Part Five, “Effective Correctional Intervention: What Works?” address the treatment of sex offenders and its effectiveness, the treatment of substance abusing offenders and its effectiveness, and the achievements and realities of correctional treatment.
