According to Stephanie Beauregard, juvenile delinquency has become a major social problem, and the juvenile justice system has failed to remedy the increasing rate of recidivism among juvenile offenders. Ohio is one of many states confronting these issues. Looking for new approaches to respond to the problems, some have argued for alternative means of dispute resolution. The Supreme Court of Ohio Committee on Dispute Resolution has provided educational and financial assistance to courts to incorporate mediation into their judicial processes. Hence, a number of courts have established or expanded juvenile victim-offender mediation programs. In this article, Beauregard presents a study of juvenile victim-offender mediation programs in Ohio. She discusses restorative justice theory, highlights the features of the mediation process, and describes several juvenile victim-offender mediation programs in Ohio.
