The positive reception of this reader [“Crime and Criminal Justice in Europe”] encouraged preparation of this present publication on criminal policy in the member states of the Council of Europe. This time it was felt that the focus should be on examples of promising practice in specific countries, which could be encouraging to other countries whilst being aware that the transfer of such practices has always to take into consideration the cultural and legal background of national systems.
