The Casey Family Program’s Cheyenne (Wyoming, USA) Division conducts a Family Decision Making (FDM) Program. It is a hybrid of the Family Group Conference and the Family Unity Meeting. The FDM model allows the family to choose to meet alone with the professionals in a facilitated planning process. It uses a strengths-based approach to give the family some clearly defined tools to work with and to portray more than the family’s deficits for the purposes of court decisions. This material provides a sketch of the history of the Family Decision Making program; philosophy, values, and principles; referral criteria; assessment process; conference preparation and process; and post-conference actions.
