A review examines policy developments in the area of spousal abuse, focusing in New Zealand, and develops an alternative approach based on principles of restorative justice. Topics cover initiatives; involvement of victims; ideological and cultural considerations; use of mediation; and the restorative justice model which includes addressing the causes of offending, sanctioning the offender, and providing redress and support for the victim. The proposed model gives women control over their lives in an effort to achieve a more culturally appropriate outcome in spouse abuse cases.
