The Minnesota Department of Corrections has produced a set of practical materials for people training to facilitate restorative group conferences. Lesson 3 deals with understanding the participants. Subjects covered by this lesson include the following: lesson objectives; four major impact areas of victimization, with special emphasis on the physical and emotional impacts; trauma; recovery; the reactions and needs of victims; responding to victims; guidelines for involving victims in conferencing; cognitive behavioral intervention; distortions of criminal thinking; and aspects of involving the community in conferencing.

This lesson is supplemented by other lessons and related materials, also produced by the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
