This research report presents the initial findings from the Family Group Decision Making project in Newfoundland, Labrador, and New Brunswick CAN. This project used an adaptation of the New Zealand Family Group Conference to reduce domestic violence in a variety of cultural settings. Trained coordinators brought together domestic abusers, their family, and their extended family and others with professionals to creates plans to stop the abuse and protect the vulnerable family members. Family agreements were approved by relevant Child Welfare case-workers and supervisors. Results from the 37 conferences include case outcomes and program expenditures. The purpose, methodology, and underlying principles are presented; and both short-term and long-terms implications are considered.
