This article discusses growing interest in southern Africa in restorative justice practices, reporting on a conference of the South African Association for Conflict Intervention. Elaine Dyer, a member of New Zealand’s court-referred restorative justice training team, spoke at the conference, and responded to the concern that restorative justice is a soft option for offenders. Anecdotes relate to vigilante justice groups in South Africa’s townships and child soldiers in Angola.
