As Lester Fernandez states at the outset, the purpose of his paper is to explore, in some depth, certain fundamental aspects of sentencing. This exploration begins with a general approach to sentencing, then goes into the purposes of sentencing. Fernandez next discusses sentencing options, the relevance of a plea of guilty, the relevance of offense committed under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and sentencing for multiple offenses. Fernandez writes within an Australian context, with a focus on New South Wales. Yet he brings in useful information and comparisons with sentencing laws, rules, and practices in other states in Australia and in Canada.
