This article deals with traditional justice in Africa and restorative justice in the United States. Following periods of violence in Rwanda and South Africa, these countries are trying to respond to crimes at least in part through traditional processes – Gacaca in Rwanda, and Inkundla in South Africa. These similar traditional systems, according to the writer, have affinities with restorative justice as it is known in the West. The article reviews the genocide and post-genocidal situation in Rwanda, the Gacaca and Inkundla systems, and efforts in the United States to apply restorative justice programs.
