Amy Potter reports on a two-day conference among practitioners in peacebuilding activities spanning community dispute resolution to civil wars and global “hot spotsâ€?. Held in Washington, D.C., in late September 2001, the conference took place just over two weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the participants had a special earnestness and desire in exploring constructive approaches to conflict. They drew upon ideas and examples from the field of organizational development, and from indigenous and traditional peacebuilding practices. Significant attention was given to the potential of “appreciative inquiryâ€? (AI) as a model for conflict transformation. AI is a structured means to identify the assets, strengths, and life-giving forces in an organization to magnify them and recreate the organizational system around them.
