“A decade after the formal political transition in South Africa and the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) it seemed appropriate to explore the form and content of “restorative justice (RJ)” principles and practices and to engage with the challenges confronting the institutionalization of this model. This two-day international conference – organised by the Institute for Criminology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), and the Institute of Law and Society of the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Leuven (K.U. Leuven) – took place on 21-22 September 2006 in Noordhoek (South Africa). It examined selected aspects of the model of RJ in post-apartheid South Africa. The objective of the conference was to critically examine the following three themes: 1) The role of civil society in the process of transitional justice beyond the TRC; 2) The challenges confronting RJ approaches for crime control and crime prevention in the high-crime context of contemporary South Africa and other African countries; 3) The consequences of a growing institutionalization of RJ practices in the formal (criminal) justice system.” (excerpt)
