Noting the variety of definitions of restorative justice, Brown focuses on the question, “What is restorative justice?â€? He seeks to answer the question through a review of historical precedents for prison reform (particularly among Quakers); examination of historical precedents for restorative principles and practices in earlier cultures and religious beliefs; discussion of basic restorative justice principles; description of various programs advanced as restorative (such as mediation, conferencing, and circle sentencing); and particular scrutiny of proposed models such as Real Justice, Community Justice, and Balanced and Restorative Justice.
