The authors of this article present an overview of research and evaluation of family group decision making (FGDM). FGDM is an innovative approach to decision making in the interests of child welfare. The article arose from American Humane’s 2002 Family Group Decision Making Roundtable. Hundreds of individuals came together to learn more about FGDM, particularly in terms of the need for empirical knowledge and research to support future implementation, improvement of practice, and sustainability. The authors discuss a number of topics relating to FGDM: the link between quality practice and evaluation; community-centered evaluation; and emerging themes and patterns in evaluation and research with respect to implementation, process indicators, and outcome indicators.
