This paper consists of a summary of preliminary findings of a research study on family group conferencing in Essex. After a pilot period, the Essex Family Group Conference began accepting referrals in 1997. Topics covered in this paper include the following: a summary of the model; information on referrals; statistics on actual conferences; outcomes from the conferences; participants’ views; and issues regarding conferencing practices. An appendix presents an overview of the research methods and results.
