The Provincial Association Against Family Violence (PAAFV) is the umbrella organization for shelters and transition houses in Newfoundland and Labrador. PAAFV promotes and protects the interests of women and children. This document is intended to increase awareness about the dynamics of abuse and violence, and the ways in which these realities affect women who participate in programs based on alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice. Through the raising of such awareness, the document is also intended to inform policymakers’ choices in developing and implementing programs and policies that will appropriately respond to women’s needs. Sections in the document cover guiding principles and assumptions, the need for a gender inclusive analysis, information about violence against women, and discussion of questions and issues concerning victims of abuse and violence and programs based on alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice.
