Eight years ago, Wilton Manors Elementary School in Wilton Manors, Florida, was struggling. The Title 1 school, with students from 24 countries, has a D rating from the state, and students were regularly being referred to guidance counselor Ana Leon for aggressive behavior. After September 11, as behavior problems from students who were anxious, losing their temper, and struggling to get along continued to sour the school’s climate, Leon decided it was time for something new.
