Harmon Wray begins this article with observations about culture and demographics in the southern region of the United States and the interplay between those factors and criminal justice perspectives and approaches. Specifically, he states that, because of cultural and demographic factors, Southern states have led the way in perpetuating cycles of violence and in the growth of the “prison industrial complex.â€? Churches in the South are an integral part of these connections. Wray identifies major patterns in the ways Southern churches view and interact with the criminal justice system. He then proposes a new model of ministry in the arena of criminal justice – a model that is more holistic and interfaith, more prophetic and transformative, and more restorative.
