With various statistics on incarceration, Consedine laments the current state of the criminal justice system in New Zealand. The specifics of his argument include the following assertions about incarceration: the poor are imprisoned disproportionately; imprisonment increases crime rates; imprisonment brutalizes people; it wrecks family relationships; it does not actually deter crime by others; and prisons are expensive. With all of this in view, Consedine declares that the New Zealand criminal justice system is at a crossroads. To change the situation positively, he urges a transformation to a restorative justice system.
