NICRO, operating in South Africa for a safer society, stands for the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Offenders. This article, written by Buhle Khumalo in The Star paper, reports on a NICRO initiative to intervene positively with children who are first-time offenders. The program gives young offenders a second chance without the stigma of a criminal record. It works to help offenders understand and take responsibility for their actions, and it encourages courts to divert cases to alternative processes for dealing with the effects of the actions and for rehabilitating the offender.
