The history and methods of the Community Dispute Settlement (CDS) program in Delaware County, PA are described. Started in 1976 by the Friends Suburban Project, the project seeks to prevent violence and provide an alternative to court for neighborhood disputes. The project now has an established funding base and handles some 300 cases per year. Chapters describe the CDS mediation session, the disputant, the mediator and the mediation model, the community, and broader replication of the model as an alternative to the criminal justice system.
