In this paper Daniel Van Ness examines the elements and process of constructing a restorative program. As with building houses, there are many variations or types of restorative programs. Yet some components are key to any type of restorative program: the foundation of the program, or its underlying principles; support for the structure of the program, which are its core values; and the vision that shapes and guides the program. Van Ness identifies the key principles, values, and vision of restorative programs as a means of explaining why some programs appear to be more ‘satisfying’ for those who participate in them.
