All states in the United States give courts the statutory authority to order that restitution be paid by the criminal offender to the victim of the crime. However, many crime victims who are awarded restitution as part of the sentencing of the offender receive little or none of the restitution ordered. In response to this problem, states are acting to improve collection of restitution. This bulletin surveys state legislation in this regard, as well as current issues with respect to the collection of court-ordered restitution to crime victims.
