Restorative creativity: Innovative school applications of restorative processes

Nancy Riestenberg is a prevention specialist with the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, & Learning. Among other activities, she leads workshops on restorative measures in schools, where she aims to demonstrate the creative opportunities that restorative principles and practices offer to school personnel. About 40 per cent of Minnesota school districts use variations of restorative processes such as victim offender dialogue, family group conferencing, large coup conferencing, and circles. Restorative processes are applied to a number of problems in schools, including truancy, possession of banned substances, bullying, racial harassment, and more. Riestenberg describes specific uses of restorative processes in a variety of school settings in Minnesota.
