In October 2002 the European Forum for Victim-Offender Mediation and Restorative Justice convened a conference in Oostende, Belgium. The conference was titled “Restorative justice and its relation to the criminal justice system.â€? The main topics of the conference, as indicated by the title, involved the cooperation and relationship between restorative justice programs and the criminal justice system. In particular, the conference focused on the perception of restorative justice practices by various agencies and actors in the criminal justice system and the impact of these practices on the criminal justice process. Participants came from many countries in Europe. They engaged each other and the conference subjects through plenary speeches, café conferences, interactive workshops, and informal discussion. This document contains a set of papers, authored by a variety of presenters, from the conference.
