Shank shares his experiences in Russia as a temporary volunteer assisting with reform efforts in the Russian criminal justice system. He discusses efforts to introduce victim-offender mediation in particular. In assessing both the opportunities and the challenges for mediation, he surveys contemporary conditions in Russian society, traditional cultural values and perspectives, and specific elements of the Russian criminal justice system.
