This briefing paper was produced by Guy Masters for the Sussex Centre for Restorative Justice. The Sussex Centre was established in 1998 to promote the development of restorative justice throughout Sussex. In the last 25 years the emphasis of most restorative justice thought and practice around the world has been the application of restorative justice to crime and response to crime. Likewise, the work of the Sussex Centre has focused primarily on the youth justice system. However, many people are beginning to extend restorative justice theory and processes to include educational settings. Similarly, the Sussex Centre is now expanding to work with schools in Sussex which are interested in exploring and developing restorative approaches to problem behavior. In this context, Masters introduces the concept of restorative justice and provides examples of restorative practice within schools.
