Restorative justice principles for reform of the criminal justice system

This document consists of a resolution submitted for action at the twenty-third General Synod of the United Church of Christ by Washington Park United Church of Christ (Denver, Colorado). The resolution urges reform of the criminal justice system on the basis of restorative justice principles. The text of the resolution contains the following sections: a theological foundation for Christians as healers, peacemakers, and reconcilers, and for justice understood in relational terms; a background to the restorative justice movement and to key restorative justice principles; and a set of recommendations for actions by the United Church of Christ to develop and promote an educational campaign setting forth restorative justice principles.
