The South Yorkshire Restorative Justice Programme (SYRJP) was developed in 2010 in partnership with the South Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board. Prior to this officers had been working within the constraints and under the pressure of a performance-led culture. This made it difficult for officers to deal with local crime in a manner that they felt was proportionate to the offence and, more importantly, underpinned by the wishes and needs of the victim. Taking a restorative justice approach to policing introduced another tool for officers to use. (excerpt)
