In this article, Katherine Van Wormer analyzes the current criminal justice system in the United States – with its adversarial approach to adjudication of disputes and offenses and its high rate of incarceration – and illuminates significant problems with it. Retribution is not working, she writes. Yet a different approach is developing and growing: restorative justice, an approach oriented toward restoring the torn fabric of community, remedying harm done to the victim and community, and holding the offender accountable. Van Wormer points out various restorative justice initiatives around the United States, and she connects insights from psychology and social work with restorative justice principles and practices.
