“Rights of victims. “

Dixon, Judith

Source: (1996) Paper presented at the Prosecuting Justice conference. Melbourne, Australia, 18-19 April. Canberra: Australian Institute of Criminology.

Dixon points out that increasing attention has been paid to the needs and rights of victims of crime in recent decades. In this context Dixon draws on the findings of the Victims’ Task Force of the Victorian Community Council Against Violence (VCCAV) for her discussion of victims’ rights. The VCCAV undertook an inquiry into services for victims of crime in Victoria (Australia). With their report as a resource, she addresses specific issues concerning victims’ rights: contact with the police; information about the investigation and court proceedings; matters that come up during the actual court case; and crimes compensation. She also reflects on community responsibility in relation to crime victimization.
