South Africa: A beacon of hope. With introduction by Kari Thorene

Tutu, Desmond

Source: (1998) Yes! Magazine (Fall)

Kari Thorene introduces this article by summarizing the work of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). She asserts that the TRC has been a powerful force for healing in post-apartheid South Africa, yet she acknowledges that some have criticized it for various reasons. That being said, the majority of the article consists of a speech delivered by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in October 1997 defending the principles, purposes, and processes of the TRC. In his speech, Archbishop Tutu talks about violence and hatred in South Africa, and about possibilities for forgiveness and reconciliation.
