S. B. Shah begins this discussion of a Jain perspective on restorative justice with a summary of Jain beliefs and worldview. Particular emphases are placed on good and evil in human existence and on the role of karma. Building on these fundamental ideas, Shah looks at the relationship between karmic predisposition, criminal activity, and victimization; atonement, repentance, and forgiveness; the state and the duty to protect oneself; and a comparison of paradigms of justice from the Jain perspective with basic principles of the restorative justice paradigm.
