This chapter, written by an American church historian, pays particular attention to issues in ecclesial self-understanding as they emerge within the context of the United States, with its particular history and place in the world. But I also hope to offer some ideas about the relationship of the U.S. Catholic experience to that of other national churches, as well as an articulation of challenges that the experience of Catholic peacebuilding poses for all local churches.
