In this address Dennis Bright reflects on Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in the context of broad political and security issues. The TRC was mandated in 2000 to create an impartial record of the armed conflict in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 1999. In Bright’s view, there is considerable ambiguity and confusion regarding the work of the TRC. In view of all of this, Bright discusses several issues in relation to the TRC and the situation in Sierra Leone: peace; reconciliation; justice; truth; and a proposal for a special court to investigate incidents during the period of conflict.
