This chapter discusses how and why restorative justice is essentially unknown in France. A main reason for this is that the concept of restorative justice was formed by English speaking countries and has not been researched or even approached in France. Another substantial reason is that the primary justice practitioners in France do not believe there needs to be a change in their “modes of action,†even though they have nearly drained the options of their current system. For the French, the concept of restorative justice is too unclear to be disseminated as a component of their “social justice†model.
