Observing the growing use in many sectors of alternative methods for resolving disputes and legal matters, Murray points to the fact that federal and provincial governments in Canada are introducing alternative measures for criminal justice matters. Partly this trend is pragmatic – it is an attempt to reduce public spending. Partly it is philosophical, based on restorative justice – it is a recognition of victims’ needs and rights, holding offenders accountable, and healing relations with the victim and the community. Murray sketches ways in which restorative justice can be applied in the justice process, the role of the police, the significance for aboriginal communities, and the extent to which restorative principles and practices will become part of the criminal justice system
