At the start of this conference you heard my colleague Corrections Minister Damien O’Connor
talk about the challenges facing the prison system. He spoke about some of our initiatives to
help inmates successfully re-integrate into society upon their release. He also spoke of the
Government’s commitment to look at alternatives to prison.
I want to talk to you about how these approaches – and the ideas and initiatives that you have
discussed over the past two-and-a-half days – fit into this Labour-led Government’s broader
vision for justice in New Zealand. (excerpt)
