In Canada, the federal, provincial and territorial governments share responsibility for responding to the needs of victims and defining the role of victims in the criminal justice system. Over the years, a number of legal and policy initiatives continue to develop in addressing victim issues. The government made a significant financial commitment in March 2000 to enhance the Department of Justice’s Policy Centre for Victim Issues. The authors describe the Centre’s mandate, organization, and activities.
