While anti-social and criminal behavior among young people is a problem, it is also true that nearly all offenders eventually “grow outâ€? of crime, as Shadd Maruna remarks. The question then is whether social institutions (e.g., schools, churches, juvenile corrections facilities, etc.) impede or foster personal development or self-restorative forces. In this regard, Shadd refers to Erikson’s idea of generativity, the concern for and commitment to promoting the next generation through parenting, teaching, mentoring, and other similar relationships and processes. With all of this in mind, Shadd explores the potential link between the development of generative concerns and ‘growing out’ of criminal behavior.
