For our purposes in this chapter, the question that will occupy us most specifically is how precisely the relationship between the vertical and horizontal dimensions of this communion is to be conceived. The key to this is provided by the Judeo-Christian categories of covenant, torah, and righteousness. To appreciate what these do and do not mean, it is critical here to distinquish them from their translation in Western Christianity into the categories of contract, lex (Roman Law), and justice respectively. This (mis)translation, I shall argue, has served to distort radically the categories definitive of the biblical tradition. (excerpt)
