TV captures killer driver’s remorse

It was the first time that a New Zealand TV crew has captured the frequently emotional arena that is a restorative justice conference.

….Facilitators put many hours of work into setting up meetings, and in the case of the Kristy King conference they met some of the people involved three times.

“There is a lot of really important behind-the-scenes work with each party to make sure this is a helpful process,” Mr Delaney said

Judges took reports from restorative justice conferences into account when sentencing, including the reparation agreed between the victim and the offender.

….”The opportunity for people to talk is a really healing thing,” Mr Delaney said

There are more than 1500 restorative justice conferences held each year in New Zealand.
