Drawing on an evaluation of three major restorative justice schemes for adult offenders in England and Wales, the paper will consider victims’, offenders’ and their supporters’ perceptions of restorative justice. The schemes involved conferencing or mediation carried out during the criminal justice process, either pre-sentence or during sentence. The paper will look at aspects of procedural justice, views on participants’ roles and contributions to find potential outcomes. Though the views of different participants may not be so different as might be assumed, they do point to potential inadequacies in the ways in which traditional criminal justice processes may be meeting these needs.
