Marian Liebmann reports on her participation in a 1999 conference in Scotland on forgiveness. At the conference she perceived two main themes. One was that forgiveness is a personal journey that can be undertaken by oneself, regardless of the attitude of the person to be forgiven. The other main theme, in contrast, linked forgiveness to the perpetrator’s seeking forgiveness and making reparation. Without trying to resolve these, Liebmann goes on to discuss other, diverse perspectives on forgiveness expressed at the conference.
